Many of us who come to southern Arizona from other parts of the country may know only the basics about our neighbor to the south, Mexico and its heritage. This overview introductory course is in two sessions; attendees can participate for one or both.
Mexico is a fascinating and complex country with a rich history and diverse culture. The story of Mexico needs to be told with beautiful music, bold colors and culinary touchstones. It also needs to be told in a somewhat more linear fashion, which we'll overview in the these two sessions.
Participants in the class are encouraged to purchase and read «A Brief History of Mexico, Fourth Edition» by Lynn V. Foster. Class sessions will include lectures, slides, and lots of interaction.
In this first session we'll explore Mexico's indigenous origins, the Spanish Conquest and Colonial period which ended in 1810. In the second session we will cover from Mexican independence to the present.
Jerry Haas, Executive Director of BCA, and Alex La Pierre, BCA's program director are the instructors.
