Sister Act is the story of Deloris Wilson aka Deloris Van Cartier aka Sister Mary Clarence (Whoopi Goldberg), a Reno lounge singer who is forced into witness protection after witnessing a mob murder. The kicker? She’s assigned to impersonate a nun at St. Katherine’s, a struggling catholic church in San Francisco. This casino sinner not only has to do a 180 flip on her persona, but she has to work under a stern and suspicious Reverend Mother (Maggie Smith). Things start to take a turn for the better when Deloris begins to work with the church’s chorus comprised of her fellow nuns (including actresses Kathy Najimi, Wendy Makkena, and Mary Wickes). Tensions rise not only as Deloris’s “unorthodox” musical choices leads to a burgeoning congregation (much to the chagrin of her Reverend Mother), but also when a tip is given to the mob as to her whereabouts. Sister Act is a classic that’s equal parts heart, humor, and “oldies” gone “holy”. Blessed be! (Dir. by Emile Ardolino, 1992, USA, 100 mins., Rated PG)
